jotokun at GameFaqs put together some comparison shots of the new Perfect Dark XBLA versus the Nintendo 64 version. As you can tell, the game is getting new textures along with its silky new framerate. The game is looking quite nice for its age. Hit the jump to see the rest. Read the rest of this entry » -
The first images of the Perfect Dark port for Xbox Live Arcade have been released. The game still looks pretty good for a 9 year old game. The Xbox.com game page states the game has all the original features plus Xbox Live features. There is also a marker for “Online Multiplayer.”

As the availability of a new PD-themed, er, theme on Marketplace today may indicate, the original pre-Zero instalment of Perfect Dark will be the third Rare N64-era classic to arrive on Xbox Live Arcade. It’ll be following in the footsteps of Banjo-Kazooie and PD’s own stablemate from the same year, Banjo-Tooie. Those troopers at 4J are already hard at work on the porting duties, sorting out the high-definition makeover and kick up the framerate you’ve come to expect. No word on any further tweaks or additions just yet, and no solid release date, but at the time of writing it seems likely to be near the end of 2009.
As stated, the game is not being ported by Rare themselves so don’t be too disappointed when you find out there are no extra features. Hopefully, 4J will have the ability to create online multiplayer. The good news is that this game appears to be a marketing strategy for the next installment of Perfect Dark. This arcade release will help build hype for the next game, much as the Banjo Kazooie games were used to build hype for Nuts & Bolts.

The free Perfect Dark theme Microsoft promised is now on the marketplace.
Marketplace Description: “Back in the year 2000, Rare continued a solid gold run of hits with the debut of a striking new sci-fi heroine. Agent Joanna Dark hit the ground running in Perfect Dark, an epic tale of galactic conspiracies in 2023 America. Now this classic shooter is coming to Xbox Live Arcade, rendered in greater definition and detail and sporting a silkier framerate than ever before. Fire up your Farsight and prepare for assignment as the Dark returns this winter.”

According to the IGN E3 schedule, another Microsoft title is going to be annouced tomorrow at 2:00 PM PST. Rare has been a no show so far and I think this is a good indication that we will hear from them tomorrow. As I predicted, this is Microsoft’s way of fighting Sony’s conference hype. Keep your fingers crossed everyone!
-
Update: No annoucements at the conference! In fact, no Rare games were shown at all. Maybe they’ll try to steal Sony’s thunder by annoucing a game tomorrow? Stay Tuned.
